A real treat for anyone who's enthusiastic about the roots of American house music: As resident DJ at Newark club The Zanzibar since 1982, Tony Humphries developed what became known as the Jersey sound, deep house with a spiritual, soulful edge as it combined influences from gospel, R&B, jazz and danceable new wave after the end of the disco era. Humphries is considered one of the most pioneering DJs of this era and has been working on his cross-cultural style ever since. Another generation, similar influences: New York duo musclecars have been hosting their party Colouring Lessons in Brooklyn since 2018, and their sets as well as their recent releases on BBE are influenced by Afro-Latin percussion, jazz, soul, acid and classic house, all with a modern touch. Boo Williams and Mark Grusane can be described as pioneers of Chicago house. Williams' DJ career, like Grusane's, began back in the early 80s, and as a producer of raw, house-funk tracks on classic labels such as Relief, he was ultimately seen as representing the second wave of Chicago house in the mid 90s. Besides these several unmissable DJ sets, on Sunday afternoon, Portable will be playing live in celebration of his new release “Magnetic Fields”.
